MENZEL to debut for the Cats
12/08/2010

I am very pleased to announce that former Golden Grove junior footballer Daniel Menzel has been selected to play his first AFL game for Geelong in this weekend's Round 20 clash against the Western Bulldogs.

Daniel played his junior football at Golden Grove and was coached in the main by both Charlie Gentilcore and Alby Madaras. Daniel was selected in this year's national draft by Geelong and has recently made it to the emergency list before this week's selection.

The Cats first pick from the 2009 draft, Daniel, will make his debut replacing Joel Corey. Daniel has excelled at VFL level kicking 27 goals from 14 games playing across half forward.

The teenager from Golden Grove was Geelong's first pick in last year’s draft and fits the mould of Cats such as Corey Enright, Joel Corey and Andrew Mackie who can all play in different positions. Daniel will become the Cats fifth player to debut this season.

Before Daniel was drafted he played under age football at Centrals and last season made the league squad. Daniel also represented South Australia in last year's National Championship.

The Menzel family have provided our club with three very talented footballers starting with older brother Chris followed by Daniel and younger brother Troy, who is currently in the Under 18 squad at Centrals and has recently just returned from playing State Under 16 football in the National Championships.

Daniel joins Shane Edwards (Richmond) in becoming Golden Grove's second player to play at the highest level.

I am sure that everyone in the club will join me in wishing Daniel every success not only in this weekend's game but for the rest of the season and beyond.

Club Opening Celebration
01/06/2010
Well the new clubhouse was officially opened last week, and to celebrate sponsors and past players, coaches, presidents and officials were all invited to come along. The new clubrooms have been a long time in the planning with the junior club starting back in 1995 and the senior club fielding its first team not long after in 1997. In those early days an ATCO hut served as both change rooms and clubrooms for the seniors - a quick hose out after the game and dirty change rooms were instantly converted into a club house!

Although the weather was dreary, the opening wasn’t and was well attended. It was a successful afternoon and evening for the club and the sponsorship committee would like to thank all the sponsors for coming to celebrate the occasion and for their ongoing support for the club. The club would also like to thank all past players, coaches, officials etc who attended and would love to see you all back more regularly! View photos

GGFC Applies for Good Sports Level 2 Accreditation
25/05/2010
The Golden Grove Football Club has an ongoing commitment to responsible alcohol management and is working towards Level 2 accreditation under the Australian Drug Foundation’s Good Sports program.

The program provides leadership and support to community sports clubs throughout Australia to manage alcohol responsibly. It aims to help clubs become more viable by creating a safe and friendly environment whilst addressing their duty of care obligations in relation to alcohol consumption. It is the first nationwide alcohol management program of its kind.

As part of Level 2 accreditation, we will implement practices around responsible alcohol management including the development of transport strategies to ensure our members get home safely. Our facilities will be smoke-free and the emphasis for player awards, fundraising, prizes and functions will not be alcohol. Food will be provided when alcohol is served and we will sell a variety of low and non-alcoholic drinks. All our bar staff will be RSA trained.

We are confident our efforts will continue to improve the environment at the Golden Grove Football Club. We are working to ensure the Club is a great place to participate and socialise for all members of our community.

The Club will be regularly monitored to ensure we comply with the program. It is the responsibility of all our members to make sure we do the right thing when drinking and enjoying ourselves.

The Good Sports program is run in South Australia by Drug & Alcohol Services SA with the support of the Motor Accident Commission and the Department of Health and Ageing.

For more information about the program contact Golden Grove Football Club Secretary, Kate Grandey on 0439434034.

Who does what in our club
26/04/2010
We have had some enquiries about who does what in our club and how to contact them when you need.

Please refer to the attached listing (sorry if I’ve missed anyone) which will also be posted on our website and notice board at the club (we have not listed our coaches, team managers & other support staff as you all should know them for your own team I hope).

All these people are volunteers and as you can see there are very few compared to the size of our club membership (about 600 players).

We are therefore seeking people to help out in any way they can but particularly for
- Bar
- Canteen
- Fundraising
- Junior Football Assistant

We don’t need you all day everyday but if you have a spare hour to help out please let me or the person in the area you are thinking about know of your availability.

Even just little things like clearing your table or area on the oval of rubbish when you leave or emptying a full bin in to the Cleanaway bin if you notice it, can help.

Message from the President
01/10/2009
Dear Members,

Mark Weaver senior coach for 2010.

As you are all aware our Senior Coach, Ashley Mitchell has decided not to go on next year and the committee have been working very hard looking for a suitable replacement. We received a number of very good applications and I thank everyone who applied for their interest in wanting to take our club forward.

A couple of weeks ago I along with Kate, Greg and Gary met with Mark Weaver the current coach of the Tea Tree Gully Football Club. Mark really impressed us at interview and his vision for our club met with all our requirements. Following this interview and subsequent discussions, I am pleased to announce that Mark has agreed to coach the Kookaburra’s for the next two seasons and we met today to sign the contracts.

Mark comes to us after four years at TTG as a senior coach. He took the Gullies from Division 2 to Division 1 two years ago and last season he guided them to a Preliminary Final only to be narrowly beaten by the eventual Premiers, Goodwood Saints.

Mark has indicated that he is very impressed with our current set up and he is really keen to coach our club especially as we have ambitions to play at the highest level.

I will be arranging an evening in early November for Mark to meet with the playing group and we will advise you of this date via email.

Mark has indicated that pre-season training will commence mid November until around 20th December and re-commence mid January.

As President I was more than aware of the need to appoint a very talented coach with good experience and I am very pleased with this appointment and I welcome Mark to the Kookaburra family.

Best regards

Ian Graham
President

Join Good Sports Program
19/04/2009
Sports clubs such as ours play a significant role in the community and therefore have a responsibility to our members and their families. In recognition of this, the Golden Grove Football Club has elected to participate in the Australian Drug Foundation’s Good Sports program.

The program is run in South Australia by Drug & Alcohol Services SA with the support of the Motor Accident Commission and the Department of Health and Ageing. The program has been designed to assist clubs with the responsible management of alcohol and is the only nationwide program of its kind.

As a community based club we believe involvement in this program is a way for our club to promote a healthy and welcoming club culture whilst working to consistently meet our duty of care obligations in regards to alcohol consumption.

To become Good Sports Level 1 accredited we will address a number of criteria including having Responsible Serving of Alcohol trained bar staff and our facilities will be smoke free.

Junior Development Policy 2009
11/11/2008
To all junior members and parents,

As you were all aware, a working party was appointed by the committee to examine the grading of junior players within the Golden Grove Football Club for ages U/11 to U/16, (where we have 2 or more teams playing in that age group).

NEMJFA had established two divisions in each age group and it was clear that other clubs had graded their players across the board, to create an "A" and "B" team.

Up until now Golden Grove had resisted this practice when placing junior players into teams as we had, (and still do), encourage young footballers to play with their friends.

With some modification, the club presented members with a Player Development Strategy with respect to the development of all club junior footballers and not just to focus on those in "red" divisions via a survey to gauge your opinion. It was clear from the responses that we should adopt such a policy.

The committee has therefore taken on board the views of the majority oif members and have introduced the attached Junior Development Policy from season 2009. Whilst essentially nothing has changed from the club's current policy, members will now be able to specifically nominate which team in which they wish to be placed ie red, white or remain with their current playing group, on registration day.

We will be placing more emphasis on each coach to be more accountable in their team's development as a group and as players individually.

Coaches in each age group, together with a panel may need to make recommendations depending on squad sizes, team balance and where best suits a player's placement to assist their development.

The club is always happy to discuss any concerns or questions that you may have and you can contact Steve Harris on 0422 655 090 or Chris Buttery on 0402 333 104.

A reminder that Junior registration day will be at Crouch Rd on Sunday 1st February, 9.30am to 12.30pm. Look forward to seeing you all for season 2009!

PRESS RELEASE ON FUNDING
28/09/2008

Dear Members,

The Harpers Field project took another step closer towards securing the $1,072,500 towards the second stage of the development. This funding as we are all aware includes development of a second oval, construction complete with floodlighting and fencing, and an amenities building and car parking.

This facility will allow the club to have somewhere to call home as well as being able to offer hundreds of children and their families a place to participate in sport and recreation activities.

As we know the previous government failed to sign a contract despite giving an approval in July last year. In contrast, the Rudd Government has agreed to deliver the funding.

Tony Zappia rang me earlier this week and told me that he has been negotiating with Minister Anthony Albanese and Parliamentary Secretary Mr Gary Gray about this funding since January 2008, and he is sure the decision by the Minister to fund Harpers Field will be welcomed by the Local Community.

Earlier this year, the Rudd Government closed down Regional Partnerships, after a scathing, three-volume, 1200-page report by the Australian National Audit Office, but it was clear that many groups, including the City of Tea Tree Gully and ourselves, had already started work based on the promises of the previous government that funding agreements had been finalised.

We have to thank the Rudd Government for giving us the opportunity to get our contract finalised. We had to prove we could meet strict requirements and timetables set down by the Federal Government.

In order to start negotiations, we had to work with the TTG council to demonstrate that we were able to meet these conditions and timetables.

The conditions included:
. the project still meets the Regional Partnerships program criteria;
. money has already been spent or commitments entered into in good faith based on the advice from the previous government;
. they are able to meet the conditions of the original funding offer;
. for projects involving construction or requiring a tender process they are able to commence their project or complete their tender process by 31 December 2008. All other projects must commence within 6 weeks of contract execution; and
. they are able to finalise negotiations and sign a contract by 31 July 2008.

We signed off on these conditions late last week and as stated the Federal Government signed off their side on Tuesday.

This is great news for the club and the council has assured me that every effort will be made to start the project early in September. The first stage of the project is the building of the amenities building and all being well; we should be able to move in late March 2009. The construction of the oval will also start around the same time, with a realistic date for us to play on the oval being the season 2011.

Although contracts have been exchanged etc. the funding has not yet been forwarded, however we are expecting this sometime in August.

May I take this opportunity in thanking everyone for their support and especially to those who helped with the petition. Although we are not quite over the finish line it certainly is a great deal closer than ever before.

Once we get a scope of works from the Council and builders we will be looking for members to come forward and offer whatever services they may be able to give the project.

Yours in football

Ian Graham

Olivers wrap for 150
13/06/2008
Oliver started his football playing career with Golden Grove as a five year old back in 1999 in the under 8’s. Even from those early games there were signs of things to come with his dogged determination and desire for the ball. Even in that first year the size of opponents never fazed him. I clearly remember seeing him show great initiative at full back leaving his man as the ball approached, meeting it and clearing it back to the centre on many occasions.

Grant Approval
23/07/2007
Dear Members,

What a great day Thursday 19th July was for our club. I had been invited to have morning Tea with our Prime Minister Rt Hon. John Howard MP at Sferas on the Park. I was also asked to take a number of young footballers with me and have them dressed in their Golden Grove guernsey’s. I have to say I was a little suspicious that there may be some sort of announcement in regard to our grant application. The boys made a guard of honour for Mr Howard as he entered the room and he was very touched by the gesture.

During her speech the retiring member for Makin, Trish Draper, informed the Prime Minister that she had a football club in her electorate who did not have a home and she would like to discus that with him later in the morning. I have to say my heart sank a little as I thought then that no announcement was to be made. In the closing statements of Mr Howard’s speech, he congratulated Trish for her hard work and mentioned that he knew how hard she had worked with the Tea Tree Gully Council and Golden Grove Football Club in developing the Harpers Field site. He then indicated that the Federal Government would like to assist by awarding the project a grant of $1.18Million.

Later in the morning I personally thanked Mr.Howard and he told me how impressed he was with our junior program and how we our encouraging young people in Golden Grove to play a sport.

This grant will be used to complete the development at Harpers Field. Namely the following improvements:

1. The construction of the second playing field which will incorporate an oval which will be fenced and floodlit. The size and quality of this new oval is intended to be as good as the existing without a cricket pitch. We look forward to playing on this oval as soon as possible.

2. New amenities building to include change rooms, storage, canteen and social areas. The committee believe it very important to relocate to this new building as soon as possible to set the foundation for the club in the future.

3. Council staff are now seeking an additional $300K from the Department of Recreation and Sport, with an application which closes in August. All of the paperwork has been prepared, however the State Government would not make a commitment until Federal Approval was received.

Obviously a great deal of work is still to be done and Greg Morris and myself have been invited to be part of a project management team to insure the delivery of these works as soon as possible and to our expectations.

In closing I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in this project. Over the years a great deal of time and effort has been put into the project by a vast number of people. Our patience has been tested over the last ten years, but I am sure once the facility is up and running we will be the envy of the State.

Thank you for your continued support and I will endeavour to post progress reports on the web site on a regular basis.
